Kingston is located about halfway between Montreal and Toronto and is an easy two-hour drive from Ottawa. The city is nestled on the eastern end of Lake Ontario where the waters of the Great Lakes begin their long journey up the St. Lawrence River, through the 1000 Islands. Kingston celebrates its 194th birthday in 2010, marking its historic past as Canada’s first Capital city. It boasts a magnificent downtown area replete with heritage buildings and award-winning limestone architecture.
Also known as the Limestone City – the architecture will be one of the first things you notice. Gleaming white limestone was used to build many of the significant municipal structures in the early 1800’s. This trend transpired from the readily available source of limestone that Kingston sits upon, as well as the abundant source of skilled immigrant masons that then called “King’s Town” home.
